A University of Minnesota graduate with a B.A. degree in Global Studies, Nicole Yarbrough is concerned with poverty, economic development, trade and policy, public health, and food security. With over six years of experience working in community development, she has held various positions in not-for-profit organizations such as the Minnesota Public Interest Research Group, American Indian Policy Center, Minnesota Food Association, Southeast Asian Mutual Assistance Association Coalition and City Year of Greater Philadelphia. Currently an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer at Fairview Main Street, a revitalization organization in Camden, New Jersey, she lives across the river in Philadelphia where she likes to bicycle, dance, and cook.
AmeriCorps is a national community service organization administered by the federal government. It was started under President Clinton and is currently an umbrella organization. There are many service divisions under AmeriCorps such as National and State AmeriCorps, Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA), Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), and more. The VISTA program was actually started in the 1960s to be the domestic Peace Corps and an anti-poverty program. VISTA volunteers provide 'behind the scenes' service to coordinate capacity building in organizations. In particular, I work on fund development, volunteer recruitment and community organizing. AmeriCorps is a great way to give back to the community and to build a strong foundation for a career. Volunteers are paid a small government stipend, get health insurance, and receive an education award at the end of their commitment term.
About Fairview Main Street
Fairview Main Street is a 501(c) 3 organization that focuses on community and economic revitalization. Our work encompasses the needs of business owners and residents in the boundaries of the Fairview neighborhood in Camden, New Jersey. These needs are met through physical improvements and business incentives to attract private investment for creating a self-sufficient neighborhood that supports jobs and convenient services for residents. FMS strives to restore the vision of the garden city design used to build the historic Fairview Village in 1918 for shipyard workers.
About Camden
The residents of the City of Camden have formed a very tight-knit community. They have faced many challenges from decades of unfair or immoral government policies that have trashed their city. More to come...
High Investment Areas in Surrounding Camden and Philadelphia Metro
Shouldn't it be the other way around? Real estate in downtowns is usually much higher than the surrounding metro in most cities (MVA map of camden from TRF).
